Gastric Pains
Definition of heartburn
Heartburn or dyspepsia is a symptom of a disease in the form of pain and heat in the stomach that occurs due to a number of conditions. These include open sores on the inner lining of the stomach (stomach ulcers), Helicobacter pylori bacterial infections, side effects of the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and stress.
Most heartburn is mild and can be treated without the need to consult a doctor. However, see a doctor immediately if heartburn persists or is accompanied by symptoms such as vomiting, difficulty swallowing, and weight loss without cause. Patients with stomach ulcers aged 55 years and over are also advised to immediately see a doctor if the above symptoms appear.
Heartburn is generally treated with drug therapy. Some types of drugs prescribed by doctors to treat this condition are antacids, H2 receptor antagonists (H2RA), proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), antibiotics, prokinetics, and antidepressant drugs.
Heartburn is a common disease in Indonesia. According to data from several endoscopic centers in Indonesia, there are around 7,000 cases of stomach ulcers performed endoscopically, and more than 85% are functional dyspepsia. Functional dyspepsia is a heartburn condition that has no known cause.
