Understanding of stroke

Stroke is a condition that occurs when the blood supply to the brain is disrupted or reduced due to blockage (ischemic stroke) or rupture of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). Without blood, the brain will not get oxygen and nutrients, so cells in some areas of the brain will die. This condition causes the body parts that are controlled by damaged areas of the brain to not function properly.

Stroke is a medical emergency because brain cells can die in just minutes. Quick handling measures can minimize the level of brain damage and possible complications.

According to basic health research conducted by the Indonesian Ministry of Health in 2013, there were more than 2 million people in Indonesia, or 12 out of 1,000 residents, suffering strokes with the largest percentage coming from the province of South Sulawesi. In addition, stroke is also the number 1 killer in Indonesia, more than 15% of deaths in Indonesia are caused by strokes. Ischemic stroke has a more frequent occurrence than hemorrhagic strokes, but killing hemorrhagic strokes is more common than ischemic stroke. Hypertension followed by diabetes and high cholesterol is a condition that most often increases the risk of stroke in Indonesia.
